Kyle Busch wins double overtime Xfinity race at Las Vegas

In typical Las Vegas fashion, Saturday’s Xfinity Series race was decided by a double overtime showdown won by Kyle Busch at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Busch took the green flag for the final green-white-checkered attempt with John Hunter Nemechek alongside. Nemechek’s No. 23 Chevrolet raced hard with Busch on the initial restart, but Busch ultimately drove away with the victory, marking his 93rd Xfinity Series win. The Las Vegas native also won Friday’s Gander Outdoors Truck Series race, priming him for a possible weekend sweep with Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race.

Nemechek held on to finish second in Saturday’s event, while another Las Vegas native Noah Gragson worked his way up to finish third in his No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet. Austin Dillon and Michael Annett rounded out the top five.

The final overtime finish was set up by the first green-white-checkered attempt, which triggered a side-by-side battle with Busch and Tyler Reddick. The duo battled for nearly two laps and were nearing the final lap when Reddick’s No. 2 became loose and spun, collecting Christopher Bell, Zane Smith and Austin Cindric in the process. Brandon Jones brought out the final caution before the double overtime after his No. 19 made contact with Cole Custer’s No. 00 Ford, sustaining heavy damage on Jones’ Toyota Supra.

Busch overcame an early hiccup to Victory Lane, as he was forced to pit at Lap 16 for a vibration that he thought could be a loose wheel. He got back on the lead lap when Cindric spun after contact with Smith at Lap 58, and took the lead for the first time with 86 laps to go. Smith’s JR Motorsports teammate Justin Allgaier lost an engine at Lap 119 and was forced to head to the garage early.

Cole Custer — who started from the pole per the NASCAR Rule Book after qualifying was rained out — won Stage 1, while Reddick won Stage 2.

The Xfinity Series is back on track on March 9 at for the race at ISM Raceway (4 p.m. ET, FS1).
